The sand-dunes cover an area of about 14 000 hectares, mostly un-vegetated with 1 800 dunes. It stretches for 50 km from the Sundays River Mouth to beyond Woody Cape and is 2.2 km wide on average. The highest dunes are 140m high and run right down to the beach and are made up of bare and vegetated dunes and bush pockets. The dunes are about 10 000 years old.
